The Blank Corner

Overview Evan Morse won the New Wave Championship at Behind Closed Doors 11 and did not get what he came for. He had The Crossroads on Desmond Pryce at sixteen minutes, at the centre of the cage, with nothing to reach on any side. He let it go — because he had a stoppage and he did not have an answer, and those are different objects and only one of them has ever been of any use to him. Six minutes later he had it again and did not let it go, and the official lifted Pryce's wrist and let it fall twice and took the decision out of his hands. Legitimate finish. Correct champion. No answer. Fifteen days later he asked the office for the cage — in writing, through the appropriate channel, which nobody else on this roster has ever done — and stood in the middle of it and told eight thousand people who despise him that the question he went in there to settle is not settled. It is simply now standing behind a championship. He is the man who filed a document in May calling somebody else's title reign provisional custody, and he has applied his own instrument to himself in public on the fifteenth day. He also declared his terms. He will defend against whoever the office selects, on whatever date, without negotiation, because a champion who selects the questions has stopped being asked anything. What he requires is not in the office's gift: he requires the result to be an answer. And in an envelope somewhere, with two words on the front and never sent, there is a marked document whose top right corner is blank — because you cannot grade a paper whose conclusion has not been reached. This angle is a reign held by a man who does not believe he has earned the right to be certain about it, defending a championship against opponents he did not pick, looking for something the rules of this federation cannot be made to produce on demand.
